We’ve all heard the term work perks but what does that mean exactly? It is benefits from your job other than your salary, vacation time, 401K, etc. What is the work perks for the employees of New Life Center for Bariatric Surgery?
For me the biggest benefit I get from working here as a Bariatric Nurse Coordinator is seeing the difference we are making in our patient’s lives. Everyday people come in and tell us how we’ve changed their lives. They tell us their stories about how their surgery has changed them and the lives of their families. A patient’s story and their struggle and accomplishments keep us going. I enjoy having patients tell me what a positive impact this is making in their life. For some patient’s the success is wearing a pair of jeans they haven’t worn in years, for other patient’s they may have run their first 5K, or they can walk farther than they’ve walked in years. One patient told me recently just being able to bend over and pick something up off the floor for me is accomplishment, “It’s something I haven’t been able to do in years.” I was thrilled for her because to her this was a huge obstacle and a task she had been unable to perform. No matter how big or small it may seem to our patient’s, we celebrate also.
For me to see a patient at the beginning of their journey and then to see them again six months or a year down the road is the best feeling ever. To see how far they have come and to know that I played a part in their success, no matter how small that role may be is very self gratifying. I haven’t really had that experience before I started working here and on days when I may not have as much energy about getting up I remind myself I have to go help change a life today and it motivates me to get to work.
