A procedure designed to help you lose significant amounts of weight by altering the shape of the stomach, but without the requirement for stomach tissue removal, is now available for eligible patients here at the New Life Center for Bariatric Surgery. Although still an investigational weight loss surgery procedure, Dr. Stephen G. Boyce is now performing Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication. This bariatric surgery technique has the potential to help patients achieve an earlier feeling of fullness at mealtimes, without removing part of the stomach or using implantable devices to restrict food intake.
Please contact Dr. Boyce for more information on Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication, or to schedule a consultation.
The Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication Procedure
The Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication (LGCP) procedure is performed by dissecting one side of the stomach, giving Dr. Boyce access to its front and back surfaces. The rounded part of the stomach is then folded in (plication) and sewn together, narrowing the stomach’s diameter and potentially allowing you to feel full after eating less amounts of food. In some ways similar to Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve Surgery), LGCP differs from that procedure in that gastric tissue and permanent alteration of the bowel is not required.
Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication is still an investigational bariatric surgery procedure.
Advantages of LGCP
Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication is still currently in clinical trials and not widely available; however, the early results have yielded some potential advantages of this procedure, including:
Risks of LGCP
Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication is still in its clinical trial phase, so risks and benefits of the technique are still being assessed. However, early data shows that LGCP may have lower associated risks when compared with other bariatric surgery procedures. So far, researchers have noted the most common side effects of the procedure are nausea and vomiting. The long-term outcomes of LGCP are still being evaluated. Dr. Boyce can answer all of your questions about LGCP at your initial consultation, and help you determine if this procedure may be the best option for your needs. If you are not a candidate for LGCP, Dr. Boyce can recommend a number of alternatives that can help you attain your goals.
