Here at the New Life Center for Bariatric Surgery, Dr. Stephen Boyce and Dr. K. Robert Williams are committed to offering a full range of advanced treatment options that can effectively help you lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. In addition to the many advanced surgical procedures available at our practice, our bariatric surgeons now offer the ORBERA™ Managed Weight Loss System, a non-surgical option that has recently been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The New Life Center is the first in the East and Central Tennessee area to provide this innovative new weight loss treatment technique.
ORBERA™ utilizes a gastric balloon to temporarily take up space in your stomach, ultimately helping you achieve an earlier feeling of fullness at mealtimes. The ORBERA™ system can help patients lose more weight in a quicker amount of time than can often be achieved with diet and exercise alone – and it requires no surgery of any kind.
The ORBERA™ Managed Weight Loss System can be performed on adult patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 to 40. This non-surgical procedure typically requires only a mild sedative rather than general anesthesia. The small gastric balloon is endoscopically inserted down the throat in its deflated state and eventually placed inside the stomach. Our surgeon will then fill the balloon with saline. Once filled, the balloon should be approximately the size of a grapefruit. The entire ORBERA™ procedure can typically be completed on an outpatient basis in about 30 minutes or less.
Six months after the ORBERA™ balloon has been placed and inflated, our bariatric surgeon will deflate and remove the balloon. This part of the procedure is also typically performed under a mild sedative and should not require hospitalization.
The ORBERA™ system includes coaching from a team of weight loss experts, even after the balloon has been removed. This part of the program is designed to help you adjust your eating habits and maintain a successful weight loss. Once the balloon has been removed, continued efforts to eat healthy and maintain an active lifestyle can help you lose even more weight. Remember, the ORBERA™ Managed Weight Loss System is a medically supervised program, so you will have healthcare professionals ready to assist you every step of the way.
