Bariatric surgery is one of the recommended weight loss tools for obese individuals who struggle to lose weight through conventional means (i.e. diet even medically-supervised ones and exercise).
Studies have shown that bariatric surgery doesn’t just aid in weight loss; it’s also effective in improving obesity-related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, and even heart disease.
In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), researchers found out that bariatric or weight loss surgery is associated with a reduction in the risk of heart disease, stroke, heart failure, kidney failure, and atrial fibrillation.
The researchers of the study compared two groups of individuals – one who did weight loss surgery and one who did not. The median body mass index (BMI) at the start of the study was similar across both groups.
The subjects in the surgery group had one of the four weight loss procedures – gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric banding, and duodenal switch.
The researchers looked into each group at how likely the individuals are to develop the major complications of obesity, which includes having heart disease and death.
At the end of the study, the researchers found out that those who had weight loss surgery didn’t just have fewer chances of dying during the 8-year follow-up, but also were less likely to develop any of the disease-related complications.
If you’ve been struggling to lose weight and suffering from any obesity-related condition, you may qualify for bariatric surgery.
