What Are The Surgical Options at New Life?
New Life Bariatric Center for Bariatric Surgery is located in Knoxville, TN. Dr. K. Robert Williams and his fantastic team of weight loss surgery experts specialize in providing services that change and improve the lives of obese people and anyone else who could benefit from bariatric surgery.
Anyone considering bariatric surgery is welcome to view or attend one of our free information sessions hosted by our surgeon Dr. Williams. There is no cost or obligation to attend, and you can choose from an online or in-person session. These sessions are essential because they go over who qualifies for bariatric surgery and what options are available.
Currently, we offer several different options, but our most popular procedures include Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (Sleeve Gastrectomy), Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, and Biliary-Pancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch.
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) is relatively new as a bariatric surgery procedure but produces amazing results for many patients. In this procedure, we remove 70-80% of the stomach to limit its size and the amount of food patients can eat. It also prompts hormonal changes that help relieve conditions associated with obesity.
While VSG isn’t the right procedure for some, it may be your best option if:
• The patient desires a restrictive operation without a foreign body.
• A stand-alone weight-loss surgical procedure for a patient with a BMI < 50 who does not want their intestine bypassed is desired.
• A staged operation for patients with excessively high surgical risk and BMI is desired. Staging procedures may reduce the risk of complications for the patient.
If you’d like more information about this procedure, including a video that explains how the surgery works, visit the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy information page.
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) helps patients reduce the amount of food they consume by decreasing hunger and calorie absorption from fat. For the last 50 years, it’s been one of the most popular weight-loss surgical options, and patients can expect to lose about 75% of their excess weight. This weight loss combined with healthy dietary changes improves health dramatically and reduces the health risks posed by obesity-related health conditions like sleep apnea, diabetes, and hypertension.
RYGB involves dividing the stomach to create a small pouch that directs food directly into the small intestine. This “bypass” allows the patient to become satisfied with food intake quicker, promoting tremendous weight loss results.
Check out our Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass information page to learn more about this procedure.
Biliary-Pancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch
One of the procedures becoming more and more popular is the Biliary-Pancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD/DS). The reason for its growing popularity is because it is a revision option for patients who gain weight after a Sleeve Gastrectomy.
This procedure is also an excellent option for the super-obese patient (BMI>50), who might fail to lose their desired weight with other options. It’s common for patients to lose 85% of excess weight. It also presents remission rates of about 95% for patients affected by diabetes.
You can find more about Biliary-Pancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch here.
Of course, these are just a few of the procedures we offer, and more will be discussed at an upcoming Info Session. In-person sessions are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 5:30 pm in the Holston Room (#204) of the Parkwest Physicians Plaza at 9330 Parkwest Blvd., Knoxville, TN 37923.
If you’re unable to attend the in-person session, the Online Seminar can be completed at any time from the convenience of your own home!
