Bariatric Surgery - Knoxville, TN

After months of being bundled up and coup inside the house, many of us are celebrating summer. It’s the best time of the year to go on vacations and spend the days outdoors.

However, this fun time can be quite stressful for those who have just had bariatric or weight loss surgery. The team at New Life Center for Bariatric Surgery in Knoxville truly understands, so we have gathered and outlined effective tips and strategies for bariatric patients to enjoy summer.

Regardless of where you are in this journey – post-op, midway, or nearing your weight loss goal, these tips can be helpful.

• Plan your travel carefully
If you just had bariatric surgery, it’s better to plan your vacations close to home for the first 8 to 12 weeks after the surgery.

We generally advise patients to walk every 45 minutes to an hour especially if traveling by plane or car (to prevent blood clots). Of course, every patient is different, so if you have specific concerns about your activity level, it’s always best to consult our bariatric team for specific guidelines.

• Set yourself up for success
Following a diet program can be a challenging thing to do when on vacation, but with a system, you can set yourself up for success.

Just like at home, you plan your meals by prioritizing protein. Eat small portions intermittently, drink plenty of water, and take your multivitamins.

Bringing a protein bar or tuna packets can be a smart thing to do especially when you’re out and about and can’t find something to eat that suits your eating plan.

• Always find time for exercise
The best thing about summer is you have a plethora of exercises to choose from. You can go swimming, cycling, or hiking. You get to move your body while having this amazing experience and view in front of you.

If you end up in a resort or cruise ship, these places usually have fitness amenities you can use. It may be a gym or fitness class you can sign up with.

Vacations may have been tough for you in the past because it makes you forget about your health goals, but make this one and the subsequent ones different.

Plan ahead and tell yourself that you are in control (because you are!). YOU are in control of what you eat, drink, and move your body.

Have a great summertime!
