What to Expect During a Pre-Op Bariatric Class

At New Life Center for Bariatric Surgery in Knoxville, TN, we believe that education is the cornerstone of successful weight loss. Hence, we make sure that our bariatric patients are equipped with sufficient and right information before they undergo this life-changing procedure.

All our bariatric surgery patients are required to attend the Pre-Operational Educational Class 3-4 weeks before their scheduled surgery.

Pre-Op Classes at New Life

This 4-hour class will provide you with the things you need to know about bariatric surgery and what to expect after it.

Surgery preparation and after-surgery care
Our Certified Bariatric Registered Nurse, Sarah, will provide you with pre-operative instructions that can help reduce potential complications. She will also provide information on what to expect after surgery and how you can take care of yourself during this period.

Diet
Diet is crucial for every bariatric patients’ weight loss success. Our registered dietitian, Krystal, will explain the meal progression after surgery, how to prepare for them, and the dietary changes you need to make during and after recovery.

To prevent nutrient deficiencies, vitamin supplements are recommended for bariatric patients. Our dietitian will also cover this topic and the appropriate vitamin regimen depending on your procedure of choice.

Exercise
Just like with diet, exercise also plays an important role in sustaining your weight loss. Morgan, our Clinical Exercise Physiologist will discuss the progression of exercise after surgery. She will talk about appropriate activities you can do during your hospital stay and the first month after the procedure.

You will have several follow-up appointments with our Clinical Exercise Physiologist after the procedure. She will also discuss the timing of these check-ups with you.

There is a quiz after the class. The purpose of this test is to provide us an opportunity to discuss again the areas that are not well understood.
